I then tried to do the same backup on the external drive I had been using with the same results, after running for over an hour it would hang. I have created a DOS bootable cd and can boot from that. But no matter what happens now you should contact Dell and Buy a Recovery Set for this computer.

Booting with the recovery disk gets the same outcome, so it will not get me to the command prompt either. my problem is this: i'm not sure exactly how to do the master/slave drive thing.. thanks xhi, yes, it's acting as you described. Not sure if check disk will run from there but you can try.
The only hope I can offer to save this hard drive is reseat the data cable inside of the computer from your motherboard to your hard drive.
